This week proved that having a great kicker is a necessary asset to success in the NFL. With the unfortunate injury to Shaun Suisham, the Steelers were forced to go out and get a kicker who they thought could fill that role. Just like Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, they chose poorly. Forgetting his roots, Josh Scobee embodied the kind of kicker that you would see on the Jaguars. Missing two field goals in the last 6 minutes to cost the Steelers the game, Josh Scobee was cut shortly after and tryouts were held to find the next man up. This game was considered a toss-up due to the injury to Big Ben, and Mike Vick getting the start at QB. Vick looked decent compared to his starts over the past two years, as he failed to turn over the ball. Although it will be interesting to see how long he’ll have to fill in, and if the offense can move forward without Ben.
As this is being written, we have our first London game of the season, and the Jets are driving down the field yet again; on what seems to be a questionable Miami defense. Rumor has it that Joe Philbin will be fired if the Dolphins lose yet again this week, due to the lack of performance from a team that was considered a favorite in the AFC East this year. Last week, Miami was embarrassed by the Bills in a home opener blowout that resembled more of a funeral than a football game. Maybe a head coaching change in South Beach is what the Dolphins need to bounce back and not have a top 10 draft pick.
After an 0-2 start, the Colts managed to squeak out their first win of the season over the Titans. It wasn’t in the most impressive fashion either, as Andrew Luck finally decided to show up in the last 7 minutes to throw for 144 yards and 2 TD’s in the fourth quarter. Thinking that this might get them back on track, Andrew Luck is expected to miss the game today against the Jaguars with a shoulder injury on his throwing arm. With the sorry excuse for a defense that the Colts have, I wouldn’t be shocked if Blake Bortles managed to have a career day and carry the Jags to a 2-2 start. It isn’t known how long Luck could be out for, but with the slope getting a bit more icy, things are not looking up for Indianapolis.
Proving yet again that he is the best quarterback in the league, Aaron Rodgers put on a spectacular performance against the Chiefs on Monday night. Despite the fact that their defense is plagued by injuries, Rodgers had his way and seemed to be able to do whatever he wanted. With 4 of his 5 touchdown passes coming out basically the same out play within the 10 yard line, there was nothing the Chiefs could do to stop the Pack. At the start of the season, there was doubts on how Green Bay would perform without star receiver Jordy Nelson, but so far, Rodgers has shown that it doesn’t matter who he’s throwing the ball to.
Every year there seems to be a team that despite not being favored, they come out and destroy teams in the first couple weeks of the season. That team this year is the Arizona Cardinals and with a scoring margin of 126-49, it doesn’t seem like they will slow up anytime soon. Granted while it is very hard to continue on the pace that they have so far, their defense has looked really good, led by Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu in the secondary. It’s not just their defense either, even with the loss of Andre Ellington the last two weeks, the Cardinals have continued to put up massive numbers; not having a game below 30 points so far. With a healthy Carson Palmer at the helm and a rejuvenated Larry Fitzgerald, the deep ball Bruce Arians offense is in full swing. Look for the Cardinals to win the NFC West and make a run at the Super Bowl this season.
With 7 unbeaten teams and 3 teams yet to have their first win, the hierarchy of the league for the 2015 season is beginning to form. High scoring offenses seem to be a trend, and while it may be due to poor defensive performances, the trend is forming that this season will be a year of airing out the ball. No pun intended New England.
